MISSIONARIES: WHAT WE ONCE EXPORTED, WE NEED TO IMPORT

April 3, 2019

America is no longer a Christian Nation.

I can’t think of America as a mission field, having been the exporter of faith for so many generations, but that is what it has become.

The United States has the largest Christian population in the world, with nearly 240 million Christians and about 384,000 congregations (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). We have a lot of “Christians” and an abundance of churches. Imagine 240 million missionaries engaged in the simple task of introducing people to Jesus Christ.

We need more members to undergo transformation and fill the churches we have.

During our trip to Rome in 2008, my wife and I visited the tourist sites, but one sight stood out, not because of its beauty, but because of a statement by our tour guide. We had just commented on the beautiful and impressive St. Peter’s Basilica. The guide said it is one of the most remarkable churches in the world, but don’t overlook that Rome has over 500 churches and many of them are empty on Sunday.

We can trace the failing power of the church to the laxness of the people. Church members have become accustomed to and almost satisfied with fellow members who are spiritual uninformed or not Christens.

And with the pressure of a world that’s daring Jesus to return, which is the same as shouting, “Come down from the Cross,” American’s see an increase in the number of missionaries from foreign countries arriving to spread the gospel of the Good News.

It is hard to conceive of a nation blessed by God needing foreign missionaries to tell them God loves them. The foreign missionaries headed to America have the commitment to execute Jesus command, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

The USA, with a population of 330 million people is an overlooked mission field with deep spiritual needs. Pray God is with us and get out and into the world and invite people to meet Jesus.
