Bible study groups meet at all times of the day, on any day of the week, and in various places. Some study sessions are brief, maybe a half-hour, other sessions may last several hours. The goal is to study God’s Word and discover how we can apply it to our lives.
The study group that meets in my senior living complex meets on Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 P.M. Last week, our lesson was about Jesus and the calming of the sea (Mark 5). You know the story. Jesus and His disciples left Capernaum and sailed to Jesus’ hometown, Nazareth, to get away from the pressing enormous crowds.
On the trip, an unannounced violent storm caught Jesus and His disciples by surprise. Jesus was asleep in the boat’s stern and His disciples were awake and frightened by the storm-tossed waters. Faced with the thought of the boat capsizing and the drowning, the disciples woke Jesus and said to him,
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and
rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased,
and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid?
Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said
to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Believers today profess to trust in Jesus’ power over the storms of life, but many fail short of demonstrating that trust when the storms arrive.
