It is tantalizing to think when we are doing things we believe to be right, that God’s is on our side.
Over the years, I’ve heard, (and personally been guilty of) people take for granted God was on their side—My team will win, Our cause is just, We need not worry, If I ask for it, I will receive it, I only need to pray, and victory is mine, etc.
Perhaps we are being unrealistic when we believe that God is with us, no matter the circumstances. Maybe we don’t understand God’s sovereignty. Perhaps we need to study Joshua 5:13-15.
13 When Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as commander of the Lord’s army.”
Then Joshua bowed with his face to the ground in worship and asked Him, “What does my Lord want to say to His servant?”
15 The commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. (HCSB)
God is Holy; not mankind. We must humble ourselves (remove our sandals from our feet) and seek God’s will before we ask Him to support us in carrying out His will.
